Dearest Caromblers!

As you probaby already know, Caromble! is available on Steam Early Access! Instead of updating 2 blogs, we have decided to post all of our development updates on the Steam announcements. We hope to see you there!

We would like end to this blog site with an interview that Thomas D. and Raymond gave in London at PC Gamer Weekender. You can find us again in London next week at EGX Rezzed.

Enjoy this video and enjoy Caromble! 🙂

Caromble! Friday #362: Story & Characters

Thomas—the artist—is completing the final art assets for Chapter 3. The rest of us are adding new sound effects and art assets to the upcoming prologue level. This will be the first level that new players will see. This way we can show a glimpse of the upcoming gameplay and give an introduction to the world of Caromble! and its main characters.

In Caromble! you fight the epic battle against your red alien nemesis. This is a very simple version of the story we have in mind. We know that it’s not necessary to communicate every detail of a story because people will create and experience their own stories inside their minds. What we do want to communicate is this battle between the paddle and the alien. In the prologue level we like to emphasize this duel with a classic “versus screen”. These are some iterations:

We have yet to agree on the names of our main characters. Maybe you already have created their names in your own mind?

Bonus question: What are those sentient beings inside the paddle’s spheres?

April Fools & New Boss Model

So yes… we did our first April Fools’ prank since we’ve started making Caromble!. Of course we will not introduce Pay-Per-Ball. The game remains a premium title. We did get some serious reactions to this, and also some fun responds.

The suggestion to ask 0.99 per ball because of the Dunlop Ball logic was very amusing.

We are currently working on several stuff. Thomas D. is working on the implementation of some new Sound effects. Raymond is working on the Boss Fight of chapter 3 where you need to use Arkatron #2. Peter is working on a Skill level called: “Race Race Race”, without using the ‘Race card’ of course. Pascal is working on the Prologue story level, which introduces both the Protagonist and Antagonist and where the epic battle for Earth commences. Thomas S is working on the new boss model, which gives it more character:

We’re still looking or good names for both the Protagonist (the Paddle) and Antagonist (The Red evil Boss-thing). Do you have any ideas?

As with every game on Early Access, there is always a risk that a game may change drastically during development. Some games even get abandoned before their planned release date.
The changes in how games are sold over the last few years and the bursting of the indie game bubble mean that we’re fishing in troubled waters.
Of course, the last thing we want is to abandon a game we’ve worked on for so many years. But the truth is, to be able to finish the game and make Caromble! the game we’ve always envisioned it to be, some drastic changes are necessary.

After a long discussion within our team we are proud to present to you: Pay-Per-Ball. What does this mean for the game?

  • First of all, Caromble! will be free!
  • Secondly, balls that are lost in the game can only be regained by buying them in the In-Game Ball Store (IGBS).

Balls can be bought individually or in Ball-Packs. The more balls you’ll buy, the cheaper they get.

To compensate people who already bought the game, we give away a pack of 100 balls to everyone who currently owns Caromble!. We are currently in discussion with Steam about the pricing of a single ball. What do you think? What should be the price of a single ball?

We hope you understand and that you’ll have many more balls to play with.

Sincerely,

Crimson Owl Studios

UPDATE April 8, 2016: This post was an April Fools’ joke 😉

This is Caromble!

This is not just another brick breaker game. This is Caromble!: a fresh new take on the brick break game. Fight evil with physics-based destruction, puzzles, explosions, unlockable skill-levels, power-ups, mayhem, boss fights, more explosions, further puzzles, speedruns, superscore medals and much more… Visit us on Steam

Our story: One day. Every week. For over 6 years.

Our story is: high productivity, slow progress and being very persisting. Why we still work on it? Because we love it! We love to transform this retro genre into something exciting and new, hopefully you will love it too!

We are Crimson Owl Studios, a team of 5 one-day-a-week indie game developers – with regular jobs as software developers and a professional artist – working every Friday for over 6 years on Caromble!.

The Road to Gold

Last year we brought our development version of Caromble! to Steam Early Access. Chapter 2 is our first major update. The full release will contain six chapters; which will be released somewhere in 2016. However, our planning skills are not top-notch… If you want to know more about the reasoning for this Early Access adventure, please check out this absurd team video!

We hope to get as much feedback as possible in Early Access to create the brick breaker you’ve always dreamed of! Visit us on Steam

Thanks and best wishes,

In our first Early Access release there are two skill levels to unlock. The first is Sharphooter, for which three medals are needed. Have you unlocked it yet? Can you beat Peter’s highscore:

Once you have defeated the Chapter 1 boss, Two teaser levels for Chapter 2 and 3 are unlocked as well. Chapter 3 introduces multipaddles and we hope you are excited for them. What do you think of our crazy-pazy work-in-progress shader effect:

We are currently working hard on finishing Chapter 2. Check the pinned discussion on Steam to keep track of our progress. We are aiming to release Chapter 2 before the end of October, but yeah… part-time indies 😛

For the Dutch fans, or any happy travelers; in 2.5 weeks, from 9-11 October, we will be attending FirstLook in Jaarbeurs Utrecht. Here you can play Caromble! and have a sneak peek at our Chapter 2 levels! Hopefully we see you there!

Early Access Round One

And the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Steam Early Access Video goes to…

What a week! Thanks for all the feedback on our Steam Early Access release! Caromble! only got positive reactions! Which is a great stimulus to work even harder towards the full release 🙂

Also, we we’re a little surprised on the reception of our Early Access Explanation Video. You people really liked it! It’s good to see our message about releasing on Early Access has been received well and gets great support. Haven’t watched the video yet? Please do.

Besides the great reactions on our Steam community page – thanks again! – some friendly redditors picked up on our video and gave really nice comments:

“This was the best explanation and implementation of Early Access I’ve ever heard. Seriously.”

and

“This is a brilliant Early Access video. Using humour and truth to break the news to people will win them a lot of leeway and respect.”

and

“Really great take on the early access system; honestly wish more people would take the route they have.”

Also, great to see Thomas – the artist – being admired for his acting skills! “And the Oscar for Best Performance by an Actor in a Steam Early Access Video goes to…”

Besides creating the game itself, it is also a lot of work for our small indie team to create additional content like our videos. It’s reassuring that the result of those midnight hours is being appreciated!

Controllers

This Caromble! Friday

After this milestone it’s time to look forward again. This Caromble! Friday we’ll discuss all the responses and decide what will be in the next bigger Early Access update. In between the content updates we’ll possibly push some hotfix updates.

We’re glad that the number of issues didn’t grow that much, so we can already focus on introducing new features.

You want control? We are working on our controller support. The logic is already present but the controller needs more tweaking to make you – ehm.. – feel in control. Naturally, we also want to add the next chapter levels. So those will probably be in the coming update.

Until next time, happy gaming!

Dear friends,
Remember my happy dance in the last blog post? Well, the time has finally arrived. We know you have been patient. We know you sometimes wondered whether Caromble! would ever see the light. But after more than 6 years of development, coming Friday on the 28 of August (yes… 2015 you clowns), Caromble! will be available on Steam Early Access.
As Friday is our one-day-a-week-indie-game-development-day, it only makes sense to do the Early Access release on a Friday. Otherwise, who would take us seriously right? Get in the mood already by checking out our new fresh trailer:

Also, if you are considering to participate in Caromble!’s Early Access, make sure you check out our Early Access Explanation Video, to find out whether Early Access is something for you:

We are thrilled to finally release Caromble! and we hope you are too!

Gamekings Studio Live

Tomorrow it’s Caromble! time! On Thursday the 22nd of May (which is tomorrow), Caromble! will be played by Gamekings for Gamekings Studio in Hoog Catharijne, Utrecht, Holland, Earth. If you are around, or if you are so excited about Caromble! that you want to buy a plane ticket to see it live for 30 minutes, come visit us!

Greenlight News in Indonesia

I am back! This means that I was away, which I was. I visited Indonesia for four weeks together with my girlfriend Hanna. We went to Java, Sumatra, Bali and Gili Trawangan and it was quite the experience: it was great, exciting, different, itchy, inspiring, warm, far away. And I was completely cut off from my laptop with Caromble!’s source code, which was kind of strange.
However, I got some great news in the last week of my holiday: Caromble! is greenlit! As I read this news in my e-mail, I made a strange undefined sound and did a silly dance. I think the sound could be described as a combination of a screech and a high pitched sneeze from the mouth and the dance was inspired by the Batak dance (including some improvised little hops), I had learned on Samosir, an island in Lake Toba, which is a lake in a huge volcano crater #awesomeviews.
I celebrated this wonderful achievement with an Indonesian cocktail with Hanna. The Indonesians themselves also celebrated this achievement with lots of fruit and joy as you can see:

Fruit celebration for a greenlit Caromble!

Fruit celebration for a greenlit Caromble!

Of course this was very nice, but I can’t wait to meet up with the team and party hard with some nice, well deserved Dutch (or probably Belgian) beers. I’m writing this in the airplane back to Holland, (yes, yes, technically I’m not back yet and the title of this blog post is incorrect. Get back to your cave troll;) ), where I would like to dedicate a few sentences to congratulate my team members:

Yeaahhhhh!!! Great work guys, we did it! Super awesomedary; greenlit tralalalala greenlit… Tralalalalalaa greenlit, altogether now, greenlit, padappapaadapa greenlit. Caromble!’s gonna be on Steam oh yeah oh yeah, on superduper Steam oh yeah yeah yeah..
So, now I’ve got that out of my system, let’s talk some business. We are currently working on polishing the game and improving the menu and gui to make Caromble! as solid as possible on all levels that influence the gaming experience. Now we have been greenlit, we will get access to the Steam SDK, so we will start implementing that as well. Also we are working on something that allows you players to experience some Caromble! very soon already. I hope we can tell you more about this in the coming weeks.
I want to thank everyone who has upvoted Caromble! on Steam greenlight. Thanks to you we can share our baby (because that is what this project is to us, nourishing it every Friday) with the largest group of players as possible. We will do our utmost best, to make sure that Caromble! deserves your upvotes and attention.

On the island Bali people were also aware of this great news and they sold these great souvenirs. I couldn’t resist buying one for the team ofcourse:)

Artists on Bali are big fans of Caromble!

Now we can finally say: Let’s get ready to Caromble! on Steam!
